Programs for Children & Youth 

The OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center is a community center housed within James Denman Middle School dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth and adults by providing educational, recreational, and supportive services. Our  After-School Learning Program (ASLP) provides children and youth the following learning opportunities:

Wellness Services Program 

 

The Wellness Program at the Beacon aims to assist youth living in the Oceanview, Merced, Ingleside and Excelsior neighborhood in making healthy life choices. We do so by offering therapy, case management, gang intervention, and substance abuse prevention in the form of both individual and group work. We provide:

  • Comprehensive Case Management Services
  • Gang Intervention Groups for At-Risk Boys
  • Individual Trauma Therapy
  • Empowerment Groups for At-Risk Girls
  • Mental Health Counseling





Community Programs for Adults & 

Community programs provide opportunities for the Beacon to connect with community members and other adults in addition to providing access to the Beacon through classes, workshops or special events.

 

  • Adult Open Gym – Gym is open week nights for adults to exercise and play sports.
  • Strengthening Families Program (SFP) – Our parent program is a way to involve parents with the Beacon in addition to providing resources to our Beacon parents.  We provide different opportunities for parents to participate and/or volunteer for various Beacon activities
  • Tax-Aid – Free tax preparation assistance to low-income families (Every Saturday during the month of February)
  • Community Fair - The goal of our Wellness Community Fair is to connect students and families with the different community resources that are available within our area, ranging from health services to job opportunities.
  • Family Nights – Family nights are offered monthly to provide opportunities for children, youth and their parents to interact and socialize in a fun and safe environment. Some of the activities include: Movie Nights, Bingo Games, Pot-luck Dinners, Bowling/Ice Skating events.
