Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays from the staff of the OMI/Excelsior Beacon

It’s already that time of year, and we’ve been engaged in fun activities to celebrate the holidays at the OMI/Excelsior Beacon with all of our school aged youth. We’ve hosted a multi-cultural holiday celebration, a special thanksgiving get together for the members of our Wellness program,  and then there’s the Annual Beacon Winter Ball.

It’s been an amazing year for our programs, our participants, and their families. We wish you all a great holiday and look forward to a new year of experiences in 2010.

Beacon/Spark Partnership Featured in SF Chronicle

Yamileth's mentor-ship at Mama's Bakery with Felicia Sanchez brings her a new opportunities outside of the classroom

A recent article featured in the San Francisco Chronicle highlights the power of mentor programs, as they give participants more incentives to learn.

The OMI/Excelsior Beacon has partnered up with Spark to make more of these mentoring opportunities happen. Our youth from our first session recently participated in Spark’s Discover Night, an evening dedicated to youth sharing their Spark mentoring experience for friends and family.

If you’re interested in participating in the next Spark session, keep a lookout for more info this March 2010.

Beacon Winter Ball 2009

The 2nd Annual Beacon Winter Ball was an amazing success!

The 2nd Annual Beacon Winter Ball was an amazing success!

Celebrating the holiday season around the Beacon was doubly exciting thanks to our 2nd Annual Winter Ball. Both students and advisers came together to plan a special dinner/dance gala event which took place in the gymnasium of James Denman Middle School.

“We’re really proud of the accomplishment and we’d love to thank all the parties involved for making our second annual Winter Ball special,” said Bee Sudaria, Enrichment Coordinator for the OMI/Excelsior Beacon and Winter Ball mastermind.

Lights. Camera. Action!

bullies

The Young Filmmakers Club has completed their first movie production for the 2009-2010 academic year. For our first film, we decided to settle on a theme and compose a mockumentary story centered around that theme. Thus, Bullies was born.

You can view the full 13 minute feature below, or click here to view in HD on Vimeo.com. Bullies is also available for download at Vimeo.com in MP4 format. Special thanks goes out to all the staff, administrators and students who made this first film possible. The Young Filmmakers Club will resume in cycle three of the Beacon calendar.
